PICKENS, S.C. (AP) -- A 25-year-old man who escaped from the Pickens County jail last week has surrendered after telling a deputy he was cold and hungry.

Sheriff's Capt. Keith Galloway said a deputy who also works at the jail got a call Sunday from Ricky Lee Smith.

Galloway said Smith told the deputy that he was cold, hungry and tired of running.

Smith was arrested around 12:30 p.m. Sunday about 10 miles from the jail where he escaped Tuesday. He had been in the jail since May 31 on 10 charges, including burglary.

Officers say Smith and 20-year-old Jonathan Dean Moody picked the lock of their cell, climbed a wall and escaped through a chain-link fence.

Moody was caught Wednesday afternoon. He had been in jail since July 10 on five charges.
