ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (AP) -- Gov. Nikki Haley says a probe into the hacking of South Carolina tax returns is almost complete, and she hopes to report next week on just what happened.

Haley was on the Isle of Palms Thursday to speak to the state Chamber of Commerce. She told reporters the hacking investigation is about 95 percent complete.

Officials announced last month a hacker using an international computer address got in to Revenue Department computers compromising both Social Security and credit card numbers.

Officials have said as many as 3.6 million tax returns back to 1998 may have been hacked.

Haley said Thursday that number may be high, but, out of an abundance of caution, officials wanted taxpayers who filed during that period to sign up for free credit monitoring.
