SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Wofford College's governing board has agreed to add sexual orientation to its anti-discrimination policy.

Students pushed for the change, giving President Benjamin Dunlap a petition with 476 signatures of students, staff, faculty and graduates.

Dunlap says they change conforms the school's policy with a long-standing practice of non-discrimination.

The school already prohibited discrimination based on race, color, creed, religion, sex, age, national original, disability or veteran status.

Two student leaders said the change is a step toward acceptance and equality. Alex Hubbard says he hopes more gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students will feel comfortable applying to the school.

Courtney Parsons says a survey last year had shown a culture of apathy rather than hatred regarding gay rights.

Converse College and the University of South Carolina Upstate have similar policies.
