PROSPERITY, SC (WACH) - A town of Prosperity police officer has been arrested on two counts of possessing marijuana with intent to distribute.

A spokesman from the South Carolina Attorney General's Office said, James Michael Smithson, 44, of Prosperity was taken into custody Thursday afternoon, September 27. Smithson is being held at the Richland County Detention Center.

On Wednesday, bond was set at $15,000 surety.

This arrest was made by the Newberry County Sheriff's Office and the State Law Enforcement Division. Both agencies investigated the case. 

Smithson's case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General's Office.
