Fort Jackson (WACH)--Sergeant 1st Class Dimetrius Nash has spent the last 20 years in the U.S. Army; and is starting a new chapter in his life.

The former paratrooper currently works at the Inspector General's office at Fort Jackson, but will retire from the military later this year. He is one of about 600 veterans that attended a job fair at the base Tuesday morning.

"I have been in the military most of my live," Nash said. "So I am new to the civilian job market."

The Pennsylvania man said he learned about resume building, improving cover letters, and how to use the internet as a tool. The fair featured more than 75 employers; including insurance, finance, public safety, and health services.

Base Transition Services Manager Carolyn Andrews said it is a great way to say thank you to veterans.

"It is the right thing to do to support our soldiers who have sacrificed to protect our way of life. It is a replicable effect, as far as them paying back for what the soldiers have done."

While Nash believes everyone has qualities to be hired; he said veterans have the discipline and skills to get the job done.

"We are leaders, we are self-starters, self-motivators. You give us a task and we move on it. Keep your hearts and minds open to these veterans coming out. They will be an asset to any company."

Nash hopes to find a job in Human Resources; and with the community support, he will be set for civilian life.
