COLUMBIA (WACH) - Hundreds from across the state meeting at the Statehouse Tuesday to remember their mothers, fathers, family and friends who lost their lives to domestic violence.
Attorney General Alan Wilson calling out the names of those killed in the past year and a silloute representing each individual no longer with us.
"You don't have to be a victim of a domestic crime to be a vicitm, or states hurts," said the Wilson.
Jorge Vasquez of Greenville has made it his mission to bring more attention to the growing problem. Vasquez lost his sister in 2011 after police say she was attacked by her husband at her job.
Vasquez says there were signs of potential domestic violence but he didn't expect it to go that far. One year later his family is still shocked.
"You see it in the movies and say it's never going to happen to me, but it happens and you don't relaize it until it hits you in the face," said Vasquez.
Vasquez's sister Lilia Blandin was having problems at home and moved out. The day after moving out she was killed. Vasquez want others to notice the signs before it's too late.
"If you see anything you believe your sister is going through, your Mother or family, stay with them, tell them and be honest. Sometimes I feel like I didn't want to step in her business, but in reality you have to step forward," added Vasquez.
The family plans to have a day in December to remember Lilia.
