COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH / AP) -- The federal Justice Department has approved South Carolina's online voter registration law.
The agency waited until its deadline to act on the state law signed in June. The timing allows just a few days for people to use the easier option to sign up to vote Nov. 6.
The law passed unanimously by the Legislature removes several steps from the paper registration process. Supporters tout the online option as helping voters, while improving the accuracy of voter rolls and saving money.
The state Election Commission has been awaiting the federal OK.
The system is currently available.
While a driver's license or a DMV is not required to vote, one form of identification is required to register online.
People who want to vote Nov. 6 can register through Saturday.
Under the 1965 Voting Rights Act, South Carolina must receive Justice Department approval for any election law change.
