COLUMBIA (WACH) - It was a typical Monday morning in Columbia's Five Points. However, after two recent assaults and a shooting, city police delivered on last week's promise of having a bigger presence in the popular entertainment district.

"There were police officers on pretty much ever corner in groups of two or three", said one Five Points regular.

City Councilman Moe Baddourah represents the Five Points community.  He hit the streets Saturday, patrolling past three o'clock in the morning.

"I though the police presence was postitive this weekend. People received the extra activity well", said Baddourah.

Baddourah said the weekend was a good test for Saturday's highly anticipated South Carolina-Georgia football game.  He says Five Points will have a handful of law enforcment units making sure there isn't a repeat of violent crime.

"USC police is going to be involved, SLED and the county Sheriff is getting involved. It's a coalition and cooperation of all goverment agencies coming together to make sure of the safety of everyone in Five Points this weekend", added the Councilman.

Baddourrah says the City Council plans to further discuss how to keep Five Points safe at its regular Tuesday meeting.
