Columbia (WACH)--In a little over a month, voters will be heading to the polls for the upcoming election; and officials are doing everything they can to make sure every vote counts.

The Richland County Elections and Voter Registration, located at the intersection of Hampton and Harden Street,, is registering as many residents as they can this week. The final day for registrations is Saturday, October 6.

County Deputy Director for Elections and voter Registration Garry Baum said his department is getting about 500 new voters a week; and that absentee voting has been steady so far.

"We encourage voters who know they will not be able to vote at the polls on election day to vote absentee here at the Richland County office. We encourage people who have not registered please come and register to vote."

Baum also said registering to vote also gives residents a chance to update their address. The office will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon for last minute registrations.
