WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- People from across South Carolina have gathered to discuss how to improve access to supermarkets and grocery stores.

Nearly 200 people were at the State Farmers Market earlier this week to discuss the concept known as "food deserts." Officials say more than a quarter million South Carolinians live in places without good access to healthy food stores.

Brown's Superstores CEO Jeff Brown was the keynote speaker. He talked about his grocery store chain's success with increasing healthy food access in the Philadelphia area.

South Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers says the good attendance at the daylong, free workshop shows that agencies are willing to work together to address the issue. Organizers are looking at starting a statewide task force to address food deserts in the state.
