ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) -- A former municipal judge in Central has pleaded guilty to pocketing the proceeds of false claims she filed for clients of her tax business.
Court records show 48-year-old Janet H. Reese pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court in Anderson to filing false tax claims.
Prosecutors say Reese prepared and filed multiple tax returns for clients for the 2008 tax year, claiming a tax credit for first time homebuyers. U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles says the clients had not bought homes, and Reese had the refunds deposited in an account that she controlled.
Authorities estimate that Reese filed more than $360,000 in improper refunds.
Reese will be sentenced later. She faces up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
