CAMDEN, SC (WACH / AP) - The attorney for the City of Camden has been arrested and charged with misconduct in office.

Charles V.B. Cushman, 59, was arrested Wednesday, according to State Law Enforcement Division agents. He was booked at the Kershaw County Detention Center.

City officials say Cushman turned himself in after a warrant was issued by SLED on September 19. He was released from jail Wednesday on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.

Cushman is accused of intentionally dismissing criminal charges of clients as long as they donated to the Camden City Drug Fund between January 2005 and December 2011, according to an arrest warrant.

The arrest warrant claims the accusations are supported by financial records, statements and documents.

A statement released by the city says Camden City Council held an immediate special meeting Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

SLED would not say how many cases were dropped.

Cushman has been the city attorney since 1987. City council put Cushman on unpaid leave Thursday night at his request. It was not clear if he has an attorney.

Neither Camden town manager Kevin Bronson nor Mayor Jeffrey Graham would comment.
