Fort Jackson (WACH)--Drivers trying to get to Fort Jackson can breathe a sigh of relief now.

The renovated Gate 2 near I-77 and Forest Drive reopened Wednesday with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The gate closed was closed in July to add an extra lane, increase the height of lanes to assist trucks, and to improve landscaping with new trees.

Col. Michael Graise, Garrison Commander for the gate,  said prior to the improvements, traffic would back up as far as a quarter mile; especially for graduation events. He said it will move a lot faster now.

"We are now able to take semi-trucks from this location where we could not in the past. We could only do that out of gate four. It is aesthetically more pleasing than it was before. Some of the gates have been taken out and we have increased the landscaping dramatically."

Officials say nearby business stand to benefit greatly as well with the new and improved look.
