COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH / AP) -- The University of South Carolina is scheduled to host a lecture on the impact that one of South Carolina's most notable figures had on modern politics.

Emory University historian Joe Crespino is at the school on Tuesday to give a lecture entitled "Strom Thurmond's America." Crespino has also written a book on the topic and is exploring Thurmond's place in the history of modern conservative politics.

Thurmond was 100 years old when he left the Senate in 2003 after 48 years. He died later that year.

The talk is free and open to the public. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Hollings Special Collections Library within the Thomas Cooper Library.
