COLUMBIA (WACH) - The body of a man was found by firefighters early Tuesday morning in Columbia, according to the Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott.

Scott says the man's body was discovered "with no signs of life" around 12 a.m. Tuesday by members of the Columbia-Richland Fire Department on Candi Lane while they were responding to a report of a brush fire.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says the victim is 60-year-old Marion J. Spencer of Columbia.

Police say foul play is suspected in the incident.

Spencer sustained some burns from the fire, according to Watts, but the exact cause of death has not been released.

Watts says it appears Spencer died a few hours before. The coroner has ordered an autopsy to determine how Spencer died, and said the death is being handled as a homicide.

Columbia Police also are investigating the death.

Anyone with information is asked to contact CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
