CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The Republican Party is preparing for a do-over primary for the state Senate seat long held by Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell.

The party hopes for another primary after a judge ruled earlier this month that its former nominee, Paul Thurmond, did not properly submit paperwork to appear on June ballots.

Circuit Judge Ernest Kinard ruled Thurmond was not an elected official and therefore not exempt from submitting a form when filing his candidacy. The son of the late U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond is a former Charleston County councilman.

Kinard called for a special primary to determine the nominee on Nov. 6 ballots for the Charleston County seat. But that decision is being appealed.

Candidates can re-file for the seat from Tuesday through Sept. 4. The primary would be Sept. 18.
