Suspect's plan to hide from police falls through

COLUMBIA (WACH) - The Columbia Police Department has arrested a second suspect in the kidnapping and robbery of an elderly couple in May.

Chief Randy Scott says Donald Javonta Smith, 21, is charged with armed robbery, kidnapping, first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm by person convicted of a violent felony.

Police say Smith was arrested Wednesday afternoon at a home on Fairfield Road near the Hollywood Hills Neighborhood where he attempted to hide ifrom authoritiesn in the attic of the home and ended up falling through the ceiling. Smith was treated for a minor injury to his arm before being taken into custody and transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

According to authorities, officers with Columbia Police Department's Warrant Team and members of SLED and the Richland County Sheriff's Department recognized Smith standing outside on Fairfield Road before he ran into the home.

Smith, John Brandon Foster, and an unidentified suspect are accused of breaking into an elderly couple's home on Koon Road in May.

The suspects in that case allegedly made verbal death threats to the couple, pointed guns at them, and forced them to lie on the ground, according to police. Several items were taken from the couple's home, some of which were recovered at another home on Koon Road and taken into evidence as part of the investigation.
