Investigators say a Clarendon County deputy shot a man who pulled a knife on the officer.
SUMTER, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say a Clarendon County deputy shot a man who pulled a knife on the officer while he was writing a speeding ticket for a different person.
Sheriff Randy Garrett told The Item of Sumter that his deputy was outside of his car after stopping a driver for speeding around 1:30 p.m. Monday outside Manning when Anthony Pearson came toward him with a knife.
The sheriff says the deputy shot Pearson in the leg. The officer and the driver were not hurt.
Garrett says Pearson had been shot by an officer in New York in a similar incident.
