Newberry, S.C. (WACH)--Countdown to Kindergarten is a state-wide initiative to help prepare children for kindergarten.

Students from Newberry Elementary School have completed a summer learning program. 

Newberry Kindergarten teacher Jackie Holmes has been involved in the program since it started.

"I'm a firm believer that you will learn the most in kindergarten, at this age group this is were learning is so important."  Said, Holmes. 

Holmes visits her students during the summer and teaches them basic fundamentals.

The program provides books, flashcards and learning tools to help keep students focused during the summer months.

Kindergarten parent Shenita Richburg enrolled her daughter in the program, education is a top priority in their family.

"I want her to know all that she can, so I was like this will be a good idea and it will keep her busy over the summer." Said Richburg.

The program has been helping thousands of children in the Midlands make the grade for several years.
