Saturday meant showing off karate skills for many students.
Children between the ages of 8-12 participated in the Battle of the Midlands tournament in West Columbia. It was the third of four year round events.
Participants displayed skills in flag sparring, sparring, grappling Jiu-Jitsu, as well as empty hand and weapons demonstrations. Every child received a medal afterward.
Brian Pena, Owner of the Karate Dojo, said it helps children grow; along with parental involvement.
"They're in here in the dojo doing positive things. They're building their bodies, building their minds. They're not outside of the dojo doing foul things or hanging out with the wrong crowd. It's keeping everything positive in their lives. We would like for mom and dad to be involved in what they are learning. That is going to help the children succeed."
