KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WACH) - A Johnsonville man has been arrested in connection with the sexual assualt of an 8-year-old in Kershaw County.

Sheriff Jim Matthews says 25-year-old Brian Robert Sharpe was turned himself in to authorities and was arrested Thursday after a month-long investigation by the kershaw County Sheriff's Office. Sharpe is charged with criminal sexual conduct toward a minor under 11.

According to Matthews, family members of the child received information last month that the child may have been sexually assualted in the early morning hours of June 1, 2012 by the child's mother's boyfriend, Sharpe. The family members contacted the sheriff's office, who scheduled an interview for investigators with the 8-year-old.

The report says an investigator also set up an interview with Sharpe who was out of state at the time. Sharpe originally aggred to take a polygraph exam, but later changed his mind and refused it. Sharpe began harassing the child's mother, who was proceeding with the charges being made against him.

“Single mom’s with children and a live in boyfriend need to be especially vigilant when it comes to their kids. We see far too many cases where live in boyfriends become sexually involved with these children,” said Sheriff Matthews.

Sharpe is awaiting a bond hearing at the Kershaw County Detention Center.
