COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Advocates for rape victims are protesting South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley's veto of $454,000 for rape crisis centers.

Legislators designated the money to the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, to disperse the funds to the 15 nonprofit crisis centers statewide.

Haley says the state should not send money to nonprofit groups. She included that veto with several other health care items she struck for sickle cell, hemophilia and kidney disease patients. She wrote that those patients have her sympathy and encouragement, but they represent a small portion of the state's chronically ill or abused. She says line items added to the Department of Health and Environmental Control distract from its broader mission.

Haley left other money in the agency's budget for rape prevention.
