NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A North Charleston police officer has been fired after shooting himself then saying someone else fired at him last week.

Investigators say they could not find any evidence that anyone else was around when Sgt. Eddie Bullard was shot early the morning of July 4th. Bullard originally reported he was shot in a struggle with a suspect.

The police department said Wednesday that Bullard, a 15-year veteran, has been fired. The department said an internal investigation found him guilty of misconduct and untruthfulness.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
