COLUMBIA, SC -- 2012 marks 100 years since the Titanic sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Now midlands residents have a chance to get a first hand account of that fateful night.
The South Carolina State Museum has a new Titanic exhibit; which has been a popular one so far this summer. The exhibit includes over 100 artifacts found from the actual ship wreck; from dishes to clothing to purses; even beds. There is also a movie showcasing how it was built until it sank.
Another unique feature is a fake iceberg for people to touch. It shows just how cold the water was that froze most of the passengers to death.
Museum Membership Manager Jennifer Thrailkail said the experience is valuable to education.
"This is a really amazing opportunity for people to come and see the actual story of the Titanic. The movie is great, but it is fictional. So this a way for groups, individuals, and families to come out and have a great experience. The exhibit actually goes throughout the entire life of the ship."
The exhibit will be at the museum until September. For more information on hours and admission, visit www.scmuseum.org.
