COLUMBIA,SC -- Bicyclists in the Midlands have a new trail in downtown Columbia to use.
The Vista Greenway trail on the corner of Lincoln and Lady Street officially opened on Saturday. Hundreds of bicyclists from five Columbia communities met to do the inaugural ride together.
The Vista Greenway used to be an abandoned rail-line corridor. It was converted to a trail as part of a national campaign called Rails to Trails.
This is only phase one of the project; which extends to Finlay Park.
Residents like Michael Hallman say it is a major step to improve the quality of life in Columbia.
"This is what makes Columbia, Columbia. It's a great place to live. An organization like this; the city of Columbia puts stuff like this together. It is good family, fun, friendly atmosphere."
Columbia Councilman Cameron Runyan said the future is bright for the city.
"I think it is symbolic of a new era, a new age, and a new way of seeing connectivity in the Midlands. And the realization that we all rise together."
