COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Gov. Nikki Haley is getting together with leaders in the nuclear industry to talk about how small nuclear reactors can bring jobs to South Carolina.

Haley and representatives from Holtec International, South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. and Areva, the French nuclear giant, are holding a news conference Tuesday at the Statehouse.

Haley's office says Holtec International is one of two South Carolina companies applying for a U.S. Energy Department grant to design, license and manufacture American-made small, modular nuclear reactors at the Savannah River Site.

The 310-square-mile site once produced plutonium and tritium for atomic bombs. Work there is now focused mostly on research and cleaning up areas of the site contaminated during weapons production and sealing off former reactor sites with concrete.
