Saluda County sheriff Jason Booth has resigned

SALUDA, SC (WACH)- Saluda County Sheriff Jason Booth has resigned.
In a letter of resignation to Gov. Nikki Haley, Booth does not specify his reason for leaving his job, but he does request that she name Saluda County Chief Deputy W.R. Freeman to fill out the rest of his term, which lasts until next January.
Booth was first elected in 2001. At that time he was one of the youngest sheriffs in the nation.
Prosecutor Strom Thurmond Jr. says the indictment alleges that Booth used the services of an inmate on loan to Saluda County from the state Department of Corrections. According to the indictment, the inmate worked on Booth's private property in Saluda County.
Thurmond and the State Law Enforcement Division investigated the case. The prosecutor says the case has been forwarded to Gov. Haley's office for the purpose of removing Booth from office and appointing an interim sheriff.
