COLUMBIA, SC -- A South Carolina World War II vet had a day to remember Wednesday.
Retired Major Moffatt Burris, along with hundreds of family and friends, got a private screening of Man and Moment...Moffatt Burriss and the Crossing. The documentary profiles Burriss's heroic actions in Operation Market Garden during World War II.
To make things even better, Moffat's long time friend in the war Lieutenant Roy Hanna made a surprise visit from North Carolina for the honor while Moffatt was told he would be unable to make it. The two Army men were both part of the operation, which was the basis of the 1977 film A Bridge Too Far. Moffatt was played by Robert Redford in the movie. He said it truly was an honor.
"It was very rewarding to come in and see over a hundred people to watch this documentary. I was totally surprised when Roy Hanna showed up. He and I were good friends during the war. We spent a lot of time together. It brought back a lot of memories," said Moffatt.
The AT&T Foundation also presented a $15,000 check to the ETV Endowment to underwrite the production. The documentary can be seen statewide Monday, July 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, July 5 at 8 p.m. on SCETV.
