COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Gov. Nikki Haley wants a 30-year veteran of the FBI to be South Carolina's next inspector general.
Haley on Wednesday named 53-year-old Patrick Maley to lead the agency that investigates allegations of fraud, waste and abuse in state government. The Senate must confirm her choice.
Haley says Maley will help make the government truly accountable to the taxpayers.
Maley has been the FBI's special agent in charge in Birmingham, Ala., since 2009 and was the assistant special agent in Columbia between 2004 and 2006.
Maley would replace Jim Martin this summer. Haley appointed him as the second inspector general last June. He committed to one year, saying he didn't want the job permanently.
