COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina legislators are extending their 2012 session.

The regular session expires at 5 p.m. next Thursday. But House Speaker Bobby Harrell says it's impossible to finish work on the budget before the session ends.

The chambers must pass a resolution to extend the session. They're still working out the specifics.

Lawmakers will likely return for a short special session beginning June 19 so conference committees can work out differences between bills passed by both chambers, including the budget.

They would likely return the following week to take up the governor's budget vetoes. The fiscal year begins July 1.

Conference committees could meet during the Legislature's week off to speed up the special session.

The House passed its budget plan in March. The Senate approved its version last Thursday.
