SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) -- Members of the Third Army are gathering to honor 22 soldiers and some family members for their volunteer spirit.

Third Army commander Lt. Gen. Vincent Brooks is hosting a ceremony Wednesday to recognize the soldiers and their family members for volunteering in the community.

Spokeswoman Tina Barnes says volunteers have participated in such events as greeting soldiers upon their return stateside in an airport, assisting in back-to-school socials and other events to support the men and women in uniform and their families.

The Third Army closed its headquarters in Atlanta and moved to Shaw last year. The move put the commands for land forces in the Middle East alongside the Ninth Air Force, which is responsible for air forces in the region.
