COLUMBIA (WACH) - The Columbia Police Department is investgating a bank robbery that occurred in downtown Columbia Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities say the Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union on Washington Street was robbed around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

According to Chief Randy Scott, Terrance L. Francis, 37, was arrested on charges of entering a bank with intent to steal by the Columbia Police Department and attempted bank robbery by the Forest Acres Police Department.

Francis is accused of implying that he had a weapon during the robbery, but he did not produce one, according to the department. He demanded money from a bank employee and fled on foot. Columbia Police Officers were able to capture Francis.

The department says an undisclosed amount of money was recovered and returned after witnesses informed officers of its location.

Francis is also accused of attempting to rob another bank on Beltline Blvd. in Forest Acres Monday.

Francis is being held at the Columbia Police Department for further questioning.

The investigation is ongoing.
