SUMTER, SC (WACH) - Approximately eight home burglaries are being investigated by the Sumter Police Department.
According to the department the burglaries have taken place during daytime hours on Boulevard Road, Timmons Street, and Rolling Creek subdivision areas during the day time. Police presence has been increased to deter any further incidents.
Authorities say the suspects are targeting specific items such as electronics, televisions, computers, jewelry, and firearms.
"Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure in their home, and we're committed to doing everything possible to make that a reality by apprehending those responsible for these crimes," said Sumter Police Chief Russell Roark.
Detectives are actively investigating these cases and following leads in these incidents, which have occurred over the past several weeks, according to officials.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sumter Police Department at 803-436-2717.
The department offers the following tips to help prevent home burglaries:
• Record model and serial numbers on electronics and firearms
• Engrave all your electronics, jewelry, and other valuables with “Identifying Initials or Numbers”
• Photograph all valuable items in your home. Store photos on disc in a secure location
• Become familiar with your neighbors and their vehicles
• Watch out for suspicious vehicles. If you see a “prowling” car, truck, or van in your neighborhood, write down the license number and description of the vehicle and its occupants
• Report all suspicious activity to the Police Department, but never confront anyone you believe to be suspicious or committing a crime
• Install deadbolt locks on all exterior doors and appropriate locks for sliding doors and windows
• Prune shrubbery so it doesn’t obscure the view of doors and windows
• Never open your door to strangers. Install a peephole so that you can properly identify visitors before opening your door
• Keep garage doors closed and locked
• Leave outside lights on at night. Consider timers or lights with a dusk to dawn sensor or motion sensor
• If you are away overnight, call the police department and request to have your home placed on a property watch
• If your home has a security system use it anytime you are away
• Remove all valuables from your vehicle and lock your vehicle even in your driveway
• Join or establish a Neighborhood Watch group in your area
