COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's top federal prosecutor is teaming up with a Columbia nonprofit in an effort to stem violence.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles says his office is partnering with the Prosperity Project, which offers tutoring and afterschool programs to inner city children through fifth grade. The group hopes to expand its tutoring efforts to middle and high school students and also offering continuing education and life skills to parents.

Nettles' initiative is part of Public Service Week, which kicks off Sunday. Nettles says the Prosperity Project can help prevent crime and ensure that children have access to a good education.

More information about the Prosperity Project and its activities, including several summer camps, is available at www.ProperityProjectSC.org . The group is also hosting an open house on May 15.
