COLUMBIA (WACH) - A few people have a better understanding of law enforcment in Columbia after participating in a 10-week training program on the inner workings of the Columbia Police Department.
According to department spokesperson Jennifer Timmons, Chief Randy Scott graduated 27 citizens, including a University of South Carolina basketball player, as part of the Citizens Police Academy.
Timmons says that throughout the process, participants recieve an introduction to the department's specialized units such as Pro-Active Community Enforcement (PACE), Drug Suppression Team (DST), Narcotics Unit, and Training Unit.
Some participants elected to be tased to obtain a better understanding of the training officers must complete.
Graduates participated in a ride-a-long with officers Tuesday night to complete their training.
The ride-a-long taught the graduates about strategies implemented by the department to deter crime in Columbia.
