Man shot while driving down Columbia street, later dies at hospital

Columbia police say a man has died after he was shot driving down the road early Sunday morning.

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Columbia police are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred along North Main Street early Sunday morning.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says Derrick Lee Conners, 22, was shot in the upper body and died from complications of the gunshot wound.

Investigators say the victim was driving in the 4500 block of North Main Street around 12 a.m. when a car started following him. According to police, an unknown number of people in that other vehicle started shooting at him.

The victim’s car ran off the road and hit a utility pole.

Conners was transported to Palmetto Richland Memrial Hospital where he died.
