COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) --The South Carolina Department of Public Safety invited family who have lost their loved ones during car accidents on the roadways of South Carolina last year.

Hundreds of people gathered at Shandon Baptist church Saturday to remember those who have lost their lives. Law enforcement was also present taking a vow to continue their duties and efforts to maintain safety on the state's highways.

In 2011 there were more than 800 people who were killed in South Carolina in traffic accidents.

Faith Turner from the S.C. Department of Public Safety said, "South Carolina Department of public safety takes it personal each life that we lose on our highways and we need to let them know it's a journey they don't have to do alone."

The Memorial Service for Highway Fatality Victims is an annual event that has been going on for the last 24 years.

It's a way to bring families together who have suffered loses and also serves as a way to educate people in efforts to prevent future deaths on South Carolina roadways.

People traveled from states as far away as Pennsylvannia to attend and remember those lost.
