COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Surveyors redrawing the North Carolina-South Carolina state line south of Rockingham, N.C., say they were surprised to find a survey of 32 miles of the boundary was done in 1905.
Alan-Jon Zupan, who is helping the work to review the state line between the Carolinas, says the reason for the more modern survey can be distilled down to alcohol.
Marlboro County in South Carolina mostly prohibited booze, while Scotland and Richmond counties in North Carolina allowed liquor. Officials wanted to run stills and bars out of dry areas.
But it didn't work. Zupan says the stills and bars just moved, with one even setting up right on the state line so someone in South Carolina could just reach across the boundary to the barkeeper and buy a drink.
