COLUMBIA (WACH) - The Richland County Health Department has opened the doors of a local eye care clinic to help uninsured people with their eye health.
The Midlands Eye Care Clinic is offering free comprehensive eye care to qualifying patients. The clinic, which opened Feb. 7, is located at the Richland County Health Department in Columbia.
Patients are seen on the first and third Tuesdays of every month, from noon to 5 p.m.
Services include eye and vision exams, prescriptions and eyeglasses.
"Where it will help me is at my church because I sing on the choir. I need to be able to see the screen and I don't want to sing the wrong words. You know, it can be embarassing being up there singing the wrong tune," said eye exam patient Isaac Williams.
According to a university study, almost 20 percent of adults under 65 in Richland County are uninsured.
The clinic, which is staffed by volunteer optometric physicians, is open to individuals 18 years old and older living in Richland and Fairfield counties.
Eligible patients must not have vision insurance and show proof of low-income status. Patients are seen by appointment only.
