COLUMBIA (WACH) - The Columbia-Richland Fire Department will be on the streets of Columbia today hoping the Midlands community will fill their boots for a good cause.
The department is hosting its annual Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Boot Drive.
Friday will be the last day of the three-day event, and firefighters will be at intersections across the Midlands until 6 p.m.
The department has been teaming up with MDA for more than 50 years. The boot drive grew over the years and in the late 1990s firefighters were allowed to collect donations in intersections and on duty.
Chief Jenkins announced last week that the department was honored by the MDA for raising the most money for the 2011 MDA Boot Drive in the Southeast by raising more than $127,000 in donations.
"With the communities assistance we can 'fill the boot' and surpass last years total, so when you see a firefighter please make a donation," said Jenkins.
According to Tara Heil, Executive Director of the Midlands MDA, "This Boot Drive is the single largest fundraising event for MDA of the Midlands. We are proud to partner with CRFD each year and appreciate the help and hope they provide to local families served by our district office.”
