Kershaw County, SC (WACH)- A Virginia man was arrested near Camden for carrying more than 600 Ecstasy pills.
On the afternoon of March 27, Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office traffic officers arrested Hamilton Casey Peoples, 25, of Chesapeake, Virginia and charged him with possession with intent to distribute Ecstasy, an illegal controlled substance.
Officers from the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office were patrolling I-20 Monday when they saw a 2012 Kia Soul being driven erratically on I-20. Deputies stopped the vehicle to see if the driver was under the influence. Officers say Peoples, the driver of the vehicle, was extremely nervous and evasive in his answers. He allowed officers to search his car.
During the course of the search, officers found approximately 600 Ecstacy tablets. The street value of the pills is $12,000. The pills were found concealed in a box on the back seat of his vehicle.
Peoples admitted that he flew to Atlanta to pick up the drugs and was on his way back to Virginia to make the delivery in the rented Kia. He had been paid $1,400 to pick up the drugs and make the delivery. The cash was also seized by officers.
Ecstasy, also known as MDMA, is an amphetamine/hallucinogenic drug that is frequently used in clubs by young people. There have been numerous deaths after its use and medical experts have stated that it can cause brain damage and severe depression.
Peoples was taken to the Kershaw County Detention Center for a bond hearing.
