Columbia police say the grenade found near Bin Lippen was old.
COLUMBIA (WACH)-- A Richland County Sheriff’s Department bomb team has detonated a grenade found outside a Columbia school.
A woman found the explosive in the dirt near a baseball field at the Bin Lippen School.
Columbia Police spokesperson Jennifer Timmons says officers evacuated the area as a precaution, while the bomb team disabled the grenade.
Timmons says recent rains likely pushed dirt away from the device, making it more visible.
Police aren’t sure how the grenade got there.
