COLUMBIA, SC -- The warm weather Wednesday gave people a chance to clean up a local creek for a good cause.

Several volunteers showed up at the Rocky Branch Creek in Maxcy Gregg Park to pick up trash. It is part of a Clean Stream Award that Congaree River keeper Bill Stangler received from the city of Columbia.

It is an effort to keep area rivers and lakes clean and reduce runoff pollution.

Stangler said it is important to keep those vital areas clean.

"The water and streams can be such a great asset to the community. They are places where people can go and enjoy themselves. They can interact with the environment and give back to nature."

USC students and members of Rocky Branch Watershed Alliance were on hand to help out.
