ORANGEBURG (WACH) - The South Carolina Highway is investigating a fatal collision involving a school bus and a 1997 Toyota Avalon.

The crash happened Monday afternoon on Charleston Highway near Weatherford Road at about 3:55 p.m. Authorities say the seven students on board the Orangeburg School District 5 bus were not injured in the crash. The driver, Lessie Njie of Bowman, S.C., was taken to the Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators say the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. They say he was not wearing a seatbelt. Three other passengers in the car with him were taken to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown.

Investigators say as the Toyota travelled east along Charleston Highway, the driver lost control of the car, veered off onto the shoulder and when he overcorrected, slammed head-on into the school bus.
