LEXINGTON, S.C. (WACH) - Last week the Food and Drug Administration told the New York Times the drug Methotrexate is in short supply nationally.
The drug is used to treat leukemia.
Lexington mother Stacey Vasquez heard about the recent report and panicked because Methotrexate is a crucial drug used to treat her 5-year-old son, Levi.
She immediately expressed her concerns to the staff at Palmetto Health Children's Hospital, where she takes Levi for treatments.
They assured Vasquez that she had no need to worry because local supply for the drug is not an issue.
"We have a whole department within the pharmacy that works on preventing us from seeing any effect of potential back orders of shortages," said Jennifer Bair the pharmacy manager at Palmetto Health Children's Hospital.
Levi was diagnosed with leukemia when he was two-and-a-half years old.
Doctors told Vasquez that Levi needed to go through three years and three months of treatments.
They began giving him chemotherapy treatments to try to send his cancer into remission, and he was put to sleep once a week for Methotrexate treatments.
Levi is expected to receive six more months of chemotherapy, which means he will need two more doses of Methotrexate.
