COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Benedict College celebrated a milestone Tuesday.

The school unveiled its new historic marker at its front entrance at the intersection of Harden and Taylor Streets. The sign marked Benedict College as one of the few places in the state deemed a historic site.It is all part of a larger marker program showcasing African-American sites in the city.

Columbia Preservation Planner Amy Moore says it is an important way for people to learn more about the school's significance.

"People can understand and begin to assimilate that Benedict College has a real important place in the development of Columbia as an educational facility. But also in how the city developed overall."

The marker was created by the city, The Historic Columbia Foundation, and the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
