AUSTIN, TX (WACH)-An online protest went public at Facebook offices in Austin, Texas and across the world Monday.
Mothers discretely breast fed their children at the offices in protest of Facebook removing pictures of them breast-feeding; some of them had posted photos on their personal profile pages.
Staged or planned nurse-ins were also set up outside Facebook offices in New York; Toronto; Seattle; London; Paris; Amsterdam; Madrid; Singapore; Dublin, Ireland; and Sydney.
The controversy over breastfeeding photos is not new but this latest protest has reignited the flame.
For Facebook, the controversy raises issues about accountability to its 845 million members at a time when the company has filed for IPO.
According to Faceook, they recieve hundreds of thousands of complaints every week about images, messages, and postings. The company points out that the removed pictures were only done so after complaints were recieved and the pictures were reviewed.
The social media giant says that it's statement of rights and responsibilities closely mirrors the policy that governs broadcast television, and places limitations on nudity because of the presence of minors.
Facebook officials say that from time to time they do make a mistake and take a picture down that they shouldn't have, and when that happens, they encourance users to reupload the pictures.
