COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Columbia City Hall was a sea of red Friday for a good cause.

City officials along with business and and neighborhood leaders posed for a national Wear Red Day picture.

The ninth annual event honors the American Heart Association's effort in heart disease awareness; and encourages everyone to wear red for one day.

In the Palmetto State, heart disease and stroke account for almost 30% of all female deaths. Guest speakers included Mayor Steve Benjamin, his wife and Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine.

Mayor Benjamin said its time to change the way people live.

"It is so important that we come together and join our voices with the red badge of courage to change the things that we can change and make Columbia a happier and healthier city for all."
