COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - An under-served Midlands community is getting some finanical help to improve residents' quality of life.
The Community Empowerment Center along with the University of South Carolina College of Social Work and the Columbia Housing Authority are working together to make changes possible in the Gonzales Gardens and Lyon Street communities.
Nearly $40,000 will go to three projects that will improve those areas. The projects include a soup kitchen with a fitness center, a food pantry and a community advocacy center. Newsletters will also be provided to help keep community members informed about their neighborhoods.
Organizers says residents gave them input on what was most needed in their community.
Each project will be granted up to $12,000. Work is expected to begin next month.
