COLUMBIA, S.C. -- An unveiling in downtown Columbia Thursday is bringing art and raising money for a good cause.
The city along with the City Center Partnership displayed "Lovely Rita" the meter maid. The steel statue was created by artist Matthew Kramer. It is part of the Change for Change program; a community art project turning parking meters into art in order to raise money for the Climate Protection Action Campaign.
"Lovely Rita" was acquired from the CCP by its Public Art Committee. Kramer said he wanted to leave a memorable message.
"The idea is if you have this meter maid if you don't pay, it just rips the meter off the ground and just take it to you; get you to put your money in. It is kind of exciting. I'll see an object and it will actually inspire what the piece is going to be."
The city has 125 old parking meters donated and waiting to be turned into works of art. WACH FOX is a proud sponsor of the Change for Change program.
